German Christmas Wine with TCM Herbs

Christmas wine is a popular warm Christmas drink in Europe, made with red wine, citrus juices and some incredibly fragrant spices. It is sometimes referred to as “mulled wine”, or “Glühwein” in Germany.

Making this drink at home will fill your entire house with the sweet aroma of cinnamon, cloves and other christmas-y spices.

For a non-alcoholic version, simply replace the red wine with fruit juices of your liking to make a delicious spiced mocktail!


Ingredients (serves 4-5 people)

Water Red (1L) Wine (300ml) Orange juice (1 cup (3 fresh oranges)) Lemon juice (1/4 cup) Brown sugar (about 150g) Tea bag (black, red or flower tea) (1)

Cinnamon 肉桂 (2 big stalks) Star-anise 八角 (5 pieces) Cloves 丁香 (1/2 tea spoon) Ginger 姜 (4 slices)


  1. Place water and all herbs and spices into a big pot /slow cooker and boil for 1 hour.

  2. Add lemon juice, orange juice, sugar and the tea bag into the pot and boil for another 15 minutes

  3. Add red wine and serve warm.

Non-alcoholic version: Replace red wine with your favourite fruit juice and add ice cubes.

水(1公升) 红酒(300毫升) 橙汁(1杯(3个新鲜橙子)) 柠檬汁(1/4杯) 红糖(150克 ) 红茶包/花茶包(1包)

肉桂(2大根) 八角(5颗) 丁香 (1/2茶匙) 姜(4片)


  1. 将水及香料放入锅/电炖锅里,并煮1小时。

  2. 将柠檬汁,橙汁,糖及茶包放入锅,煮15分钟。

  3. 加入红酒,趁温享用。
